I hear you and what you said is actually valid. I however feel like our social discourse is ‘rinse and repeat’ like you said because we have still not tackled this issue, our issue. If other countries mainstream discourse is on your FYP, it does not mean that they don’t discuss other topics such as these ones locally ( I personally has seen and read things that make me feel like America and Korea don’t have anything to talk about besides those silly ‘rinsed and repeated topics’. That’s the same way our mainstream media is about men and marriage but that does not mean we don’t talk about art and cultural appreciation and crimes and knowledge, we do.

What I’m trying to say is you are viewing this as a Nigerian who feels ‘others’ are far more intellectually developed than we are and that in itself and not your post, is not fair.

Great writing though, I love your words.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment. You’re absolutely right, every country has its rinse-and-repeat moments, and we’re not the only ones stuck in cycles. I hear you on the fact that deeper conversations do happen here too, and I completely agree.

But my point is: we just don’t amplify them. The loudest voices usually dominate the space, and over time, it starts to feel like that’s all we’re engaging with.

Really appreciate you taking the time to read and respond so thoughtfully, thank you!

Will you really blame us?

In a nation where laziness is the order of the day, how do you expect us to think right, let alone clearly?

Someone rightly said, and I quote, "You can't give what you don't have."

The Nigerian social media content is a reflection of its deep-rooted values. That's what we know and have to offer.

We value marriage so much that we consider it an achievement. In fact, if a lady is 30 years old and still unmarried, she might be cursed.

Until we're ready to break through the noise and expose our minds to a higher level of thinking, we'll keep writing the same plot.

I hope we get it right soon. We really owe that to the next generation.
